Tien genomineerden maakten kans op een geldprijs van €1000, een expositie plek tijdens de volgende STRP editie en een masterclass van V2/Nimk the agency. De jury bestond uit Sander Veenhof (AR mediakunstenaar), Ine Poppe (gepassioneerd art & technology journaliste bij NRC Handelsblad), Vivian van Gaal (kunstprogrammeur STRP Festival) en juryvoorzitter Margriet Schavemaker (hoofd collectie en onderzoek Stedelijk Museum).

De lijst met genomineerden kwam voort uit verschillende disciplines; van dans tot software tot beeldende kunst als gemene deler bevinden ze zich allemaal op het snijvlak van kunst en technologie.

De jury was onder de indruk van de hoge kwaliteit van de projecten, maar miste soms wel een bepaalde reflectie op de maatschappij in de werken. De uitverkoren winnaar Adri Schokker daarentegen baseerde zijn werk op de aardbeving in Japan. Zijn werk loopt parallel aan het gebrek aan emotie die je kunt ervaren wanneer je bijvoorbeeld op het nieuws geconfronteerd wordt met beelden van de meest verschrikkelijke rampen of slagvelden. Wat gebeurd er als je zelf onderdeel bent van de ramp, wanneer je, je eigen lichaam in het slagveld ziet liggen?

De bezoeker begint bij de installatie van Schokker in een ruimte waar je een keuze kunt maken uit verschillende lichaamsprofielen. Handjes in de lucht? Een been omhoog? Hierna wordt er van jouw foto razendsnel een miniatuur 3D print gemaakt, waarna jouw lichaam in de catastrofe wordt geplaatst. Opeens is er een omslagpunt en blijkt de installatie helemaal niet zo grappig te zijn. Adri Schokker wil zelf de installatie en vooral het slagveld groter maken. Daarnaast zou hij ieder poppetje een chip mee willen geven, zodat je later je zelf met een soort metaal detector terug kunt vinden tussen de duizenden ‘doden’.

De jury was overtuigd door de manier waarop Schokker begint met interactieve lol die vervolgens wordt getransformeerd naar een klein beeldhouwwerk waar je toch een nare smaak aan overhoudt. Met andere woorden, Schokker speelt met de conventies van interactieve media kunst en dwingt zijn publiek om te reflecteren op hun verwachtingen.

‘Public’s Choice’ winnaar Sandra Stoycheva krijgt in het juryrapport al een eervolle vermelding. De jury vond haar werk poëtisch en esthetisch, een klein werk dat direct museum potentie heeft. Niet voor niets won zij dan ook de publieksprijs met ‘Hourglass’ een zandloper die een nieuwe kijk op tijd geeft. In plaats van boven naar beneden, stroomt de vloeistof omhoog, wat een tegengesteld beeld op de tijd oplevert.

STRP Festival vindt het belangrijk deze jonge talenten een podium te bieden in de donkere tijden die vooral mediakunst tegemoet gaat. Dit jaar presenteert Joris Strijbos, de winnaar van vorig jaar, zijn werk Phase=Order op de STRP EXPO.

STRP Festival is nog tot en met 27 november te bezoeken, met morgen tot diep in de nacht de top aan elektronische muziek, zoals Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin, The Field en Beardyman.

FORUMMEDIAVIBES VOL. 2 AUGMENTED REALITY

De tweede editie van ForumMediaVibes staat in het teken van Augmented reality. Augmented reality, of AR, is een techniek waarmee virtuele beelden op een zo natuurgetrouwe wijze worden toegevoegd aan de werkelijkheid wanneer we door het oog van de camera van een smartphone of een pc de wereld bekijken.

Programma:
Paul Warne en Mike Wozniewski zijn eigenaars van Hololabs Studio in Montréal, Canada - een onderneming gespecialiseerd in oplossingen voor interactieve nieuwe media waarbij de nadruk ligt op zogenaamde mixed-reality technieken. Hun laatste product is de speelse do-it-yourself AR funkit Farrago waarover ze alles komen vertellen.

Studenten van het Frank Mohr Instituut deden samen met professionals uit Québec een onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden en wensen voor het gebruik van een AR-app die het bouwproces van het Groninger Forum volgt en tegelijk het verleden, heden en de toekomst van het bouwterrein laat zien. Vanavond presenteren zij hun snode plannen.

Science LinX, het science center van de RUG, weet een brede doelgroep voor (bèta)wetenschap te interesseren. Ze komen naar ForumImages met drie van hun AR-projecten: MACHT-tig (reis met de interactieve AR-vouwkubus mee naar kosmisch kannibalisme), Nanofoon (over de maakbaarheid van de nanowereld en zijn bizarre structuren) en MolecularCity (bekend van De Nacht van Kunst & Wetenschap: zoek de markers in ForumImages en ontdek de moleculaire basis van het dagelijks leven)

AB-C Media Weblab openbaart met behulp van AR in prachtige 3D-animaties hoe de magnifieke Domkerk in Utrecht eruit zag voordat deze in 1674 werd verwoest door een orkaan. En hoe dit monumentale stadsplein in 250 het Romeinse fort herbergde dat de bakermat was voor het toenmalige Trajectum. AB-C Media maakte een aantal verschillende AR-projecten waarmee het verleden van een stad op spannende wijze wordt onthuld.

Nu iedere kunstenaar zich door middel van AR vrijelijk en onbeperkt kan bewegen en de ultieme toplocatie op het gebied van kunst met de “We AR in MoMA” expositie bereikt is, zoekt virtueel ruimtelijk kunstenaar Sander Veenhof zijn toevlucht tot een volgende dimensie met de bedoeling te ontsnappen aan de toegenomen drukte in de augmented realiteit: de dimensie tijd. Onder de fascinerende titel Update preemptive_AR_manifestations set visible = true where location = 'genk' onthult hij het eerste onofficiële kunstwerk van Manifesta 2012 middels AR.

Vj, animatie- en mediakunstenaar Maaike Engels presenteert deze tweede editie van ForumMediaVibes.

De Canadese makers presenteren hun werk in het kader van het Québec Festival waarin het Groninger Forum participeert.

Broken Circle/Spiral Hill is the only Land Art work by Robert Smithson in Europe. It was made in 1971 within the framework of the event 'Sonsbeek beyond lawn and order' Plans exists to build a visitors centre to make the work more accessible, but it is currently only open for visits during work hours.

BROKEN CIRCLE/SPIRAL HILL

Precisely 40 years ago this year, the American artist Robert Smithson produced his world-famous work of art Broken Circle/Spiral Hill in Emmen. Robert Smithson created his 'earthwork' in the sand quarry run by the De Boer company in Emmerschans, near Emmen. He produced the work at the invitation of the 'Sonsbeek buiten de perken' (Beyond the Pale) exhibition. Forty years following its completion, and after a highly eventful history, the work in Emmen is once again in good condition, and is the regular destination for those interested in Smithson's work from all over the world. Broken Circle/Spiral Hill is the only ‘earthwork' created by Smithson still in existence outside the United States. Smithson made numerous works in the land, and considered three of his monumental works to be permanent. One of these works is Broken Circle/Spiral Hill in The Netherlands, the other two are located in the United States: Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake, Utah and Amarillo Ramp in Amarillo, Texas.

ROBERT SMITHSON IN EMMEN BROKEN CIRCLE/SPIRAL HILL REVISITED

From 17 September - 27 November 2011, the Centre for Visual Arts (CBK) in Emmen dedicates a major exhibition to this subject. The show contains preparatory sketches by Smithson he made during his stay of two weeks in the Emmen region in 1971 as well as documentary material of the project’s history.

Roel Arkesteijn is curator of the exhibition.

BREAKING GROUND: BROKEN CIRCLE/SPIRAL HILL (1971-2011)

As an integral part of his earthworks, Smithson made films that reveal the spatial and environmental context of the work. As a result of a tragic aircraft accident during a reconnaissance flight in 1973, Smithson’s life and work came to a premature end. Smithson was never able to finish the video Broken Circle/Spiral Hill. Forty years later, a video incorporating the original film footage is now completed on behalf of the Land Art Contemporary program in a collaboration between artist Nancy Holt and curator Theo Tegelaers of SKOR | Foundation for Art and Public Domain. The video is on view in the exhibition at CBK Emmen.

SNDRV is the working title of the art practice of the Amsterdam based artist Sander Veenhof (NL, 1973) who studied computer science at the VU university in Amsterdam and graduated in the direction 'instable media' on the Rietveld Art Academy in 2009. His artistic practice balances on the border between these domains, researching recent technological advancements to create projects within a cultural context, sometimes by inversing the trends of our time. Slowing down experience, making things unlogical or impractical, questioning the unconscious interpretation of technological 'improvement'.

His work focusses on new models of interaction and communication, so it's not a surprise that contemporary mobile phones are his foremost fascination. The massive growth of an instantly reachable geographical connected iPhone audience offers new borderless possibilities. The recent developments in the field of mobile Augmented Reality (the additional of a virtual layar to reality) allowed him to exhibit in in the MoMA museum in New York, create a one dimensional artwork and currently he explores new ways to open up the virtual public space for anyone to contribute to.

As an independent artist, equipped with a technical intuition and knowledge, Veenhof moves across the whole spectrum of new media (art) production, ranging from conceptual thinking to technical realization to innovative marketing inventions.

Esther Polak (1962) studied graphic art and mixed media and is interested in how technology determines (visual) perception. In this context she explores the visual and documentary possibilities of GPS.

Her AmsterdamREALTIME project (2002) was one of the first large-scale art explorations in GPS (Global Positioning System) mapping. Ten inhabitants of Amsterdam carried per week a GPS tracer with them. Their routes through town were made visible on a projection screen in the exhibition space. The traces on screen form an alternative, highly personal map of the city. This was a joint project of artists Esther Polak, Waag and Society Jeroen Kee (http://realtime.waag.org).
Lately she developed the collaborative MILKproject. In this project a European dairy transportation was followed from the udder of the (Latvian) cow, to the mouth of the (Dutch) consumer. All people who played a role in this chain received, for a day, a GPS-device that registered their movements. The team developed a lucid visualization-software for these traces, and let the participants react upon them in their own kitchens or living rooms. MILKproject tells the personal life-stories of these very different Europeans, from the Latvian farmer to the Dutch open-air market salesman with his clients, who are all connected by one thing: the milk from a truck of one Latvian milk collector. At this moment Polak works on a new GPS-project in Nigeria.For this project the tracks of both nomadic herdsman and regular dairy transports will be recorded and visualized. The project will make use of a newly developed GEP-visualization tool: a small robot will draw the tracks directly on the ground in lines of sand. This way the tracks can easily been shown to the Nigerian participants and discussed with them along the road. (www.nomadicmilk.net).

In her projects Polak manages to strip GPS of its nerdy riffraff, and instead uses the technology for making comprehensible visualizations and telling human stories.

Eleanor Grootoonk: Winner of the George Verberg Scholarship 2010!

I’m very happy to anounce that I won the George Verberg Scholorship 2010.

This will make it possible for me to do a 2 month research in Stockholm(Sweden) and to travel up north to make a film in the scenery of the Northern Lights.

The Jury raport:
The jury knew it was facing four extremely different personalities at various stages of their artistic development. Once again we were struck by the excellent preparation and impassioned presentations of the nominees.

After much deliberation, the jury unanimously decided to pick the artist whose artistic development and potential have crystallised. She gave a strong presentation in which, on the one hand, she explained very well how she wanted to approach her art project, but also deliberately left space for the unpredictable, for the narrative.

She convinced us that this trip HAS to be made. She is an artist whose travel experiences we expect to lead to original images, tranquil moments and ultra-realistic pictures combined with transience.

Concept for the Scholarship

My proposal:
Eleanor Grootook’s planned destination was Sweden. In Stockholm she would conduct research for two months for her trip to the polar circle. She wanted to make a stop-motion film, using the latest HD technology, about the Aurora Borealis (Northern lights).

“I do not intend to make a film that is too esoteric, or a nature film. My idea is in fact to draw inspiration from conversations I want to have with the local population, to create a modernist translation of the folklore and, with the aid of materials I come across on location, to write a scenario for an art film, which is played out in the real-time setting of the Northern lights.” The incidence of light has always been an important aspect of Eleanor’s work. She is seeking an image that remains etched in the memory. Once every 11 years, the Northern lights are extra powerful – the next time this happens will be in the winter of 2011 / 2012.

Omschrijving

Het Groninger Forum blikt terug in het verleden, staat met beide benen in het heden en springt naar de toekomst met het Schoolplein van de eenentwintigste eeuw. De deuren van ForumImages staan wijd open voor iedereen van 8 tot 80 om te komen spelen op het Schoolplein van de eenentwintigste eeuw. Dat kan natuurlijk niet zonder een blik te hebben geworpen in de geschiedenis en kennis te hebben gemaakt met het schoolplein van het verleden. Ondertussen denk je natuurlijk na over wat er op dit moment allemaal op het schoolplein gebeurt - maar je kunt er ook vrolijk voor kiezen om je (met of zonder kinderen) vol overgave te storten in de futuristische schoolpleingames, die speciaal voor dit project zijn ontworpen en ontwikkeld door mediakunstenaars van de FMI Masters (Frank Mohr Instituut). De games staan opgesteld in zaal 2 en in het filmcafé in ForumImages, zij-aan-zij met nostalgisch spelmateriaal. Wees welkom!

Painteractive! - Pasquale Direse
Painteractive! is een virtueel schilderspel. Met een draadloos apparaat, dat ook nog geluid maakt, kun je de muren of het filmdoek beschilderen in allerlei fantastische kleuren. Verf en kwasten zijn niet meer nodig!

BodyPong - Jan Klug
Dit spel is gebaseerd op de klassieke videogame Pong, maar vindt plaats op een echt geprojecteerd speelveld. De spelers gebruiken hun lichaam als instrument om de virtuele bal heen en weer te spelen.

Augmented Reality Puzzle - Sarah Janβen
Een team kinderen maakt samen een puzzel. De puzzelstukken op de grond hebben ieder een AR-code die gefilmd wordt met een webcam. Door de puzzelstukken goed te positioneren worden ze door de camera gelezen en wordt de afbeelding langzamerhand zichtbaar op de muur (projectie). Alleen door goed samen te werken kunnen de deelnemers de puzzel oplossen.

Hoe houd je zo lang mogelijk je voeten droog? Een groepje kinderen staat op een eiland dat steeds kleiner wordt. Wanneer het eiland in tweeën breekt, heb je drie seconden om te beslissen of je overspringt naar een nieuw eiland, of dat je op het oude eiland blijft staan. Zo ontstaan en verdwijnen er continu nieuwe eilanden.

De Proto Game Machine is een behendigheidsspel waarin twee teams tegen elkaar spelen: een team gebruikt een kleurensensor om aan te vallen, het andere team beweegt de tafelplaat om de ballen te laten rollen ter verdediging.

Order vs. Chaos en Zus & Zo - Marcel de Vries
Order vs. Chaos is een audiovisueel spektakelspel, een Jongenskast, dat door een of twee spelers tegelijk bespeeld kan worden. Zus & Zo is een vrolijke kast vol wonderbaarlijke wezens en swingende creaturen, speciaal voor meisjes. Groepjes deelnemers kunnen rouleren tussen de gamemachines. De diverse spelelementen in de kasten zijn te bedienen via verschillende sensoren en een uitgebreid knoppenpaneel; de participatie van de spelers en hun onderlinge communicatie zijn de ingrediënten om de spelkasten tot leven te wekken.

Verschillende stellen plaatjes worden geprojecteerd op de muur, de bijbehorende reeks beelden op de vloer. Probeer twee dezelfde plaatjes te vinden: ren over de vierkanten, stop en klik twee keer met je voet op het vakje om het te openen. De speler met de meeste gevonden paren wint.
Red Dot - Adriana García Gaitán, Aggeliki Tsekeni, Nicole McKenna
Het speelvlak bestaat uit een groot vierkant, met in de verst van elkaar verwijderde hoeken een gele en een blauwe zone. De deelnemers moeten proberen van de ene naar de andere zone te komen zonder te worden getikt door de alsmaar bewegende rode stip waardoor ze worden opgejaagd. Als je wordt getikt, klinkt er een toeter en ben je af. Degene die als laatste overblijft, heeft gewonnen.

Studio Roosegaarde: Interactive Landscapes
Artist and architect Daan Roosegaarde explores the dawn of a new nature that is evolving from technological innovations by designing interactive landscapes that instinctively respond to sound and movement. Daan Roosegaarde’s remarkable works of art function as a documentation of the dynamic relations between architecture, people and e-culture. His sculptures Dune, Liquid Space, Flow and Intimacy embody an environment of ‘tactile high-tech’ in which the visitors and the space become one. The connection that is established between design and content, between ideology and technology, results in what Roosegaarde calls ‘techno-poetry’. His lecture Interactive Landscapes offers a futuristic perspective on every-day reality.
Roosegaarde’s work has been shown at the Tate Modern and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and at the National Museum in Tokyo, as well as in public spaces all around the world.

Establishing dialogues about art and technology

With its courses Bachelor Autonomous Visual Art, Teacher Visual Art and Design, Pop Culture, Design and FMI Masters, Studium Minerva sails under the flag of the Art and Society Knowledge Centre. To maintain this imagery, jetties are offered by the various courses of the Minerva Art Academy in the form of unusual and inspiring activities such as lectures, debates, workshops and/or master classes, the aim being to discover the space for artistic contributions to society.
By means of this quest, Studium Minerva makes manifest the different positions of artists, designers and educators in the professional field and society alike, at the same time stimulating the creation of space for new contributions from an artistic angle.
In this context, the artistic autonomy of artists and their artistic and/or critical way of thinking is the point of departure. This offers opportunities to make unexpected connections with various disciplines and topical social and scientific issues.

Studium Minerva takes place when dusk is falling and Minerva’s owl flies out. On several evenings, dialogues and other activities will be organized on the subject of art and technology. Especially on such dusky evenings, the fear of the dark may be enhanced by the existing romantic and distorted dread of technology.

Studium Minerva seeks to reach a wide audience of students, lecturers, alumni, enthusiasts and others interested in the subject.

On this occasion, the so-called Hap van Klaas * (Klaas’s snacks) will be available to students, which means that on payment of a small amount they will be offered the opportunity to have dinner prior to the lectures.

Italian media artist and architect, lives and works in Amsterdam. Her work involves the creation of sensorial and perceptual mechanisms in immersive and augmented environments. Over the last years she has been specifically interested in a field of research concerning the ‘Body as Interface’. She was artist in residence at V2_, Institute for the Unstable Media (Rotterdam 2004), Rijksakademie (Amsterdam 2004-2005), STEIM and Netherlands Media Art Institute (Amsterdam 2006), [ars]numerica (Montbeliard 2009). Her interactive installations have been exhibited and presented internationally. She received the Excellence Prize at Japan Media Arts Festival (Tokyo, Japan 2008) and the Honorable Mentions at Prix Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria 2007) and VIDA 9.0 (Madrid, Spain 2006). She has been a member of the jury for Prix Ars Electronica, Interactive Art 2008 and Prix Ars Electronica, Hybrid Art 2009.

De Hot 100 lossen het op

Tijdens Picnic mochten de Hot100 zich gisteren op een assortiment 'e-culture'-problemen werpen.

Toen ik studeerde was het laatste dat je wilde het lievelingetje van de docent zijn. Dat is voor de Hot100 wel even anders. De favorieten van docenten bij kunst-, media- en communicatieopleidingen werden de Hot100 gedoopt en mochten tijdens Picnic gezamenlijk werken aan een zevental inspirerende opdrachten.
'Hoe distribueer je mediakunst?'. 'Hoe ziet de toekomst van de krantenillustratie er uit?'. 'Hoe bied je toeristen het cultuuraanbod aan dat bij ze past?'. Met dit soort vragen worstelden de studenten gisteren en ze smulden ervan.
De selectieformule is wat ondoorzichtig, maar de enorme variatie in typen studenten maakt de Hot100 wel tot een prachtige dwarsdoorsnede van de cultuurmakers van morgen. Van mediatechnologiestudent tot beeldend kunstenaar. In de volgende Bright kun je met vijf studenten van de Hot100 nader kennismaken.

De tentoonstelling is samengesteld door kunstcritica en semesterdocent Ingrid Commandeur en draagt de titel: Alternative Modernity.

Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving
Van 3 juli t/m 8 juli presenteert Academie Minerva ook het werk van afgestudeerden van de bachelors Autonome Beeldende Kunst, Vormgeving Communicatie, Vormgeving Ruimtelijk Ontwerp en Docent Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving. De expositie is te bezichtigen aan het Gedempte Zuiderdiep 158 en in het voormalig postkantoor aan de Munnekeholm 1 te Groningen. De expositie wordt tegelijk met de expositie van de FMI Masters geopend aan het Gedempte Zuiderdiep 158 op zaterdag 3 juli om 16.00 uur.

Academie voor Popcultuur
Afgestudeerden Muziek en Vormgeving van de Academie voor Popcultuur in Leeuwarden presenteren zich in een eindexamenshow met de titel 'Here we are everywhere part deux' op vrijdag 2 juli 2010 op de eigen locatie aan de Achter de Hoven 23 in Leeuwarden. Aanvang is om 19.30 uur en entree is gratis.

The art of randomized landscaping

Sarah Janssen is a cross-media designer, and is currently enrolled in the Frank Mohr MFA Interactive Media and Environments. Janssen recently launched an interesting project called Googlescape. She advertises it as a web-based gallery of photographs generated via Google Streetview.

The Googlescape project website reloads automatically, showing a new randomly selected ‘landscape’ somewhere in the Netherlands every minute. The photographs are displayed in the middle of the screen, against a black background. It is as if you are looking at these photographs as works of art. This experience is heightened because Janssen left out most of Google Streetview’s interactive interface, and because she used other display conventions familiar to the art world besides the centered presentation, for instance by giving the photos a title, an ‘author’ (Google), and a date.

Googlescape made me ponder on the differences between interactive Google streetview users, who usually look at particular places with a particular goal in mind, and Janssen’s passive spectators, who watch the randomly generated views on Holland pass before their eyes. The composition of the photographs is also intriguing. The Google camera was placed on top of a car. When these images travel to Janssen’s website in the guise of landscapes, they feel artificial, in the sense that they do not refer back to a human body or an eye behind the camera. This sense of artificiality is enhanced due to the stitching of different images taken at regular intervals. The human, ‘subjective’, element of individual scene selection we know from conventional landscape photography was not part of the production process.

Interestingly, some of the images do come across as very pleasing to the eye, and it would not surprise me if they could serve as sources of inspiration for landscape photographers.

It was nice to have a lecture and studio visit with American performer/composer and cycling 74 accomplice, Gregory Taylor yesterday. The visit started with a lunchtime concert in studio A7 (photo: top left to right, bottom) with myself, adapted mandolin; Greg, laptop; and Kasper, re-appropriated and homemade instruments. The topic of his lecture centered on data control structures. I will say, he is not one to hold back; even after the lecture, he was forth-coming with suggestions and ideas for approaching musical ideas. Thanks to Jan for organizing the visit. GREGORY TAYLOR EXTENDS THE REACH OF AMBIENT IMPROV
The world is full of musicians who can humble us with their ability to play for really long periods of time,” says mixologist and producer Gregory Taylor, explaining his fascination with Indian ragas and Indonesian tonal systems — just two of the many musical forms that propel his creative flow. “One of the great gifts of experimental music of the 1960s, and John Cage in particular, was the idea that what makes a piece of music meaningful is the contemplation of it. And in the last decade or so, the arrival of wholesale access to non-Western music also gave us the great gift of discovery that this wasn't our idea.”

A veteran of the indie “cassette culture” craze in the '80s, and a tireless musical traveler (with a weekly radio show on Madison's WORT-FM that has aired since 1986), Taylor knows a thing or two about the regenerative power of sound. His mastery of Cycling '74's Max/MSP opened the door for his contribution to another one of that company's products: Radial, a loop-based performance suite (since discontinued) developed by John Eichenseer. Taylor has used the program to stunning effect on a recent spate of releases: The Desert Fathers: Coptic Icons (pfMentum, 2007), recorded live with trumpeter Jeff Kaiser; PGT's Temporary Habitations (Loochtone, 2008), featuring mandolinist Terry Pender and programmer Brad Garton; and Taylor's solo outings, Amalgam: Aluminum/Hydrogen (Palace of Lights, 2007) and Two Maps of Danaraja (Stasisfield, 2008).

“I've found that the simplest thing you can do to sound different from everybody else is to make your own loops,” Taylor explains. “Radial matches my sensibility because it's something that I can play with from zero as soon as I walk onstage. I tend to start with nothing when I play live — on The Desert Fathers, there might have been some filtered shortwave broadcasts or some water in a bathtub or something — and I do that because a lot of my work is informed by Indonesian tradition. With electronic instruments, it's easier to manage timbre if you work with just intonational variants of Indonesian tunings.”

In his solo outings, Taylor explores the subtle timbral variations of the Indonesian gamelan ensemble with an even more drawn-out ambient approach; ringing sonic textures gradually morph and “breathe” to reveal new elements or to build on a haunting theme. In his collaborations, Taylor often delves into Radial's ability to cut up and rearrange samples in real time, adding a glitchlike rhythmic quality to his soundscapes.

“We're essentially designing big structures that we steer by using a single control,” Taylor notes. “Instead of thinking about doing music that's about change, you do it about the rate of change. Instead of controlling a filter all the time, for example, the filter slewing is essentially under some other piece of control, and I'm controlling something else that controls that as a side effect.”

As with any experimental music that's improvised almost entirely live, the end result does involve some risk. But when it comes to working in a group, the approach has its rewards. “There's not a performance tradition for using laptops,” Taylor says. “I was afraid when I started working with other people that I wouldn't be able to adapt to that. And at a certain point, you realize that working in a community gives you the opportunity to fail. But the upside is that I've found myself in situations where I can play with people who are my friends. How does it get better than that?”

Gerald Van Der Kaap is een van de belangrijkste Nederlandse kunstenaars, en een grondlegger van het gebruik van nieuwe media in de beeldende kunsten. Hij is sinds 1993 veelgevraagd vj in vele binnen- en buitenlandse clubs. Van Der Kaap begon zijn loopbaan als fotograaf en uitgever van het tijdschrift Zien (1980-1986). Hij kreeg in 1991 een eerste solo-tentoonstelling in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (Hover Hover), waarna vele tentoonstellingen volgden in binnen- en buitenlandse galeries en musea.

Zijn werk is vaak gepresenteerd tijdens evenementen zoals Heineken Night Live in AHOY Rotterdam met een symfonieorkest van 80 man (1999), en in bekende Amsterdamse gelegenheden, zoals Club RoXY en Chemistry. Vanaf 2000 organiseert hij maandelijks State of Bliss, een experimentele clubavond in samenwerking met DJ´s Dimitri en 100% Isis.

In 1996 kreeg Gerald Van Der Kaap de Capilux Alblas Prijs voor zijn hele oeuvre. Naar aanleiding hiervan verscheen de monografie Wherever you are on this planet, met een overzicht van zijn werk tot dan toe (Uitgeverij 1001). Gerald Van Der Kaap was born in Enschede, the Netherlands, in 1959.
He studied at Academie voor beeldende Kunsten St. Joost, Breda.
From 1980 until 1989 he worked as an editor and publisher for different magazines.
He has carried out several commissioned art projects. He also works as VJ and is the creator of an “automatic veejay machine” at club 013 in the South of Holland.
He has also worked as a producer of art visual magazines such as Zien (1980-86) and Blind (1989).
He currently works on a number of assignments and projects which have/will become public shows in the Netherlands.
He’s been awarded Capi-Lux Alblas prize in 1996.

Gerald Van Der Kaap is one of the world’s leading media artists whose work has caused considerable controversy.

Passing the Information (II) is the sequel to a project of the same name, which Van Der Kaap presented in 2002 in Xiamen, China. Van Der Kaap spent three months as artist in residence at the University of Xiamen, a fast growing city on the South China Coast. According to officials, Xiamen is not only the most beautiful but also the cleanest city in China. For his exhibition in Xiamen, Van Der Kaap rebuilt a classroom with traditional Chinese school desks. A white surface was installed as a type of blackboard on which the artist projected video portraits of students he made acquaintance with. Passing the Information does not present teachers in front of the classroom, but students watching students telling jokes or students looking into the camera with a penetrating gaze. In this setting, the entirety of Chinese hierarchy and authority is temporarily neutralized, if not nullified. Without solicitation, Van Der Kaap also organized an outdoor party where he was both VJ and DJ. More than 1000 young people attended the party, which was the first of its kind in China.

Part Two consists of a series of works that result from a rigid, almost formal direction. The works explore situations in and around the campus and demonstrate an outstanding quality. They reside in a liminal zone between reality and fiction. The works are neither wholly documentary in nature nor illusions of narcissistic dreams. They are more a reflection of an engaged approach in which people are not models or actors, but participants. No commitment is implied, but Van Der Kaap aims to stimulate, or as he describes it, “pass on information.”

If Part One can be qualified as a “Manifestation,” Part Two is certainly a “Manifesto.” According to Van Der Kaap, “these are temporary and autonomous actions. Yet in one way or another they seem to bear consequence in the spheres outside photography. In China at least, they seem to interfere in their reality. Why specifically there? Maybe because such turbulent changes are taking place in China at this time. This work requires a totally new culture…"

The leading roles in Passing the Information are interpreted by three Chinese girls: Fang, Limei and Weiwei. Any real-life resemblances is merely coincidental. They play themselves, other people, and their own dreams. Van der Kaap has kept the hundreds of sms-messages and diary notes that he received from China via e-mail for a future publication or film. He may use this material when he returns to Shanghai to make a short film. As the artist said himself, "This is a work-in-progress. The making of as well as the meaning of the work change in time and through passing …let’s make it easy… the information."

About ‘Secret dialogue: about children hospital’ (2009)
‘Secret dialogue: about children hospital’ contains a dual screen High Definition video and a series of panoramic images, about the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children in Hackney that was closed down in 1997. After the hospital was closed down, there were burglar and passer-by entering the hospital without permission, now the site is guarded by security. For more than ten years, the empty site intertwined with the history of the children patients, the hospital staff and the interlopers. The remains from people establish certain hidden dialogue.

About the video
The image and the use of effect are simply ‘triggers’ of the thinking of the past and of the compressed childhood life from an empty site that was abandoned. The video attempted to by ‘triggering’ viewer’s short-term memory, then to explore individual value about life and death.
About the photography
Time seems frozen at the site, but subtly mixed with different interferences by different people at different time. The linear installation of the images leads the audience to witness the interlacing timelines of the history of the hospital.

Als we een indruk willen krijgen welke richting de beeldende kunst in de toekomst zal inslaan kunnen we dat het beste doen door werk van masterstudenten te tonen, zij zijn immers de kunstenaars van de toekomst. Al een aantal keren heeft DeFKa werk laten zien van masterstudenten Painting, dit jaar worden daar voor het eerst studenten Scenography en IME aan toegevoegd.

On Oct. 9th de fenestrated hosted an evening of performance. The only guideline was that things had to be in real-time or performed. The domain was open to any expressive form. Conservatively, the event consisted of A/V improvisations, aside from a few minutes of spoken word. The form was rigid, as performers regarded each others' work with a reserved discretion. Most notably, performance, as a distinct and fluid motion, allowed the performers with an audio (or musician's) practice to stand apart from the visually minded. However, performance skills are only acquired through experience. Never-the-less, the fact still remains that music is the highest art form humanity has realized.

Seminar on ‘Research in Artistic Practices’

In the context of ‘October, Month of Knowledge Month’ the FMI Master’s course has organized, in conjunction with Kenniscentrum Kunst en Samenleving (Knowledge Centre for Art and Society) a seminar on the vision of research within the FMI Master’s course. Theory and research occupy an important position in the curriculum of the three Master’s programmes (Painting, Scenography & Art Direction, and Interactive Media & Environments). The precise role of research within artistic practice is the topic of broad and international conjecture. Depending on the interpretation of ‘research’ and ‘artistic practice’, various standpoints have been taken on this issue.
To the Frank Mohr Institute, the significance of research within the Master’s art programmes has been a moot point for some time. The publication entitled Let’s Bake the Future (2007) gave the programmes the opportunity to speak out on this theme and, more recently, Dieter Roelstraete, a guest author in the Frankie Says Mohr catalogue (2009), also reflected on this question. With a knowledge centre and a lectureship looming on the horizon, the FMI Master’s course again wishes to focus on ‘Research in Artistic Practices’ in a further exchange of ideas with tutors and students. The following questions will serve as a starting point in this discussion:

Which forms of research can be relevant within artistic practice?
Are there important differences between individual and shared artistic research practices?
Which position can these research practices occupy in a Master’s programme?
Within this framework, which relationship can be formed with the knowledge centre and the lectureship?

Layer Cake Lab

"Layer Cake Lab" is a project in which we comment on the subject of public space pointing out the many ecological and social issues that have to be dealt with when placing works of art in public space.
We were invited to create a work of art for the Westergasfabriek Park in Amsterdam at a location called the sculpture garden which is basically a grassy spot of about seventy square meters. The Westergasbabriek itself has a distinctive industrial history producing gas from coal until the late 1960s. This production had tar, petroleum and cyanides as it’s toxic byproducts leading to serious pollution of its immediate local environment. Even after the conversion of the factory into a park area this toxic waste remains buried in the ground, and this is one of the reasons for the sculpture garden being largely unused, as installing a work of art in a sustained way would mean that it had to be secured safely in the ground, which until this day is not allowed due to the circumstances indicated. Our goal of creating a site-specific work of art was also about creating a solution for setting up art in a hostile environment. We wanted to investigate the actual conditions of the upper and lower ground levels, and offer a long-term solution to install works of art in the sculpture garden. Eleanor Kathleen Grootoonk and me set up the "Layer Cake Lab Organisation" in order to cultivate this area of the park, starting off with a four week intense ground research on location. On a daily basis we excavated a number of ground samples in accordance to specific bore hole patterns. This took place in a performance setting ie. wearing protective suits with all the work accomplished in a secluded part of the grass area. All samples were analyzed and evaluated in our stationary laboratory consisting of special self-invented equipment and operating from the Artist-in-Residence building next to the test area.
First we developed different remedial measures to expurgate the polluted ground, but then opted for a different approach namely the thickening of the upper layer with a special art-friendly ground and thus enabling suitability for contemporary Art to be grown on. We donated 40 cubic meters of this ground surplus to requirements to the City of amsterdam in the form of a big hill, dumped on location. The hill came with a bow and wrapped in a red ribbon. Dispensed over the 70 square meters of grass an excellent cultural medium could therefore be provided not only for future Works of Art but for a substantial improvement of their environment as well. Kees de Groot werkt sinds 1981 als autonoom beeldend kunstenaar. Na zijn studie aan de AKI te Enschede en de Rijksacademie te Amsterdam heeft hij zich in de jaren 80 bezig gehouden met onderzoek en ontwikkeling van audiovisuele tapes en installaties, en behoorde destijds tot de eerste generatie Nederlandse videokunstenaars.

Vanaf begin jaren 90, met de opkomst van de PC en het internet, kent zijn werk een multimediaal karakter door toepassing van uiteenlopende disciplines. Installaties, performances, audio-acts, Veejayshows, billboards, objecten, fotofucks enz., waarbij vaak met gebruik van symboliek uit de massa(media)cultuur verwezen wordt naar (actuele) maatschappelijke thema’s.

In 1995 heeft Kees de Groot het kunstenaarsinitiatief PLANETART opgericht en organiseert daarmee projecten en manifestaties in binnen en buitenland. Sinds 2004 produceert PLANETART in de binnenstad van Enschede het jaarlijkse GOGBOT- festival voor EnvironMental Arts, Media and Technology.

Since 1981 Kees de Groot worked as a fine artist. After his studies at the AKI in Enschede and the Rijksacademy in Amsterdam he has been in the 80's involved in research and development of audiovisual tapes and installations, and belonged to the first generation of Dutch video artist.

From the early 90s, with the advent of the PC and the Internet, his work with a multimedia character by applying various disciplines. Installations, performances, audio-acts, VeeJay shows, billboards, objects, photofucks, etc., often using symbolism in the mass (media) culture refers to (current) social issues.

In 1995, Kees de Groot founded the artist initiative PLANETART and organizes national/international events and projects . Since 2004 PLANETART produces in the center of Enschede GOGBOT the annual festival for Environmental Arts, Media and Technology.

Justin Bennett: guest-teacher iME

Justin Bennett (b. 1964) is regarded as one of the leading sound artists currently working in the Netherlands. His work charts the sounds of everyday life. In his first one-man museum exhibition, Bennett will show a selection of work produced over the last fifteen years, including a number of sound sculptures never previously presented to the public.

Bennett grew up in Great Britain, but came to the Netherlands in the late eighties to study sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. This was followed by graduate research at the Jan van Eyk Academy in Maastricht. Since then he has lived and worked in The Hague and Barcelona. As a sound artist, Bennett is chiefly active outside the mainstream museum and gallery circuit. He makes interventions in public spaces, exhibits in the context of artists’ initiatives, presents his sound sculptures during festivals and in theatres, and records his work in the form of limited-edition vinyl records, CDs and videos. In this form, examples of his work have been included for some time in the Gemeentemuseum’s city collection. Noise Map will give visitors to the GEM an opportunity to experience the diversity of Bennett’s work. The majority of his sound installations are subdued and minimalistic. Beirut Story (2004), for example, is a record of the everyday sounds of Beirut, magically blended with material from a local radio channel and accompanied by a series of slides. In Crystal radio, made in the same year, heavily distorted sounds are disseminated via resonating glass bowls set out on the floor, creating an illusion of space. His earlier Soundhouse (1998) consists of a structure built of PVC tubing ending in funnels. If you put the funnels to your ear, you hear fragments of various conversations between a man and a woman. Specially for this exhibition, Bennett is creating a new soundscape condensing sounds of urban life over a 24-hour period to produce a succinct composition. In a text entitled ‘Let there be noise’ (2003), Bennett has explained his preoccupation with sound as follows: ‘Noise is the sand between your toes, the kink in the cable, the music that keeps you awake and the sea that lulls you to sleep. Noise is accident, chance and luck. Noise is the vibration of life itself’.

Day 1
The workshop was opened by (the host) Robert van Heuman [http://hardhatarea.com/hatlog/]
He demonstrated various features of Steim's LiSa program.

LiSa is basically an easy-to-use, but not-so-versatile program for live/recorded sampler/looper. It loads sound into a buffer and you adjust (or not adjust) the parameters by which it plays back, e.g. playback indices and rate. Pretty much any possibility specifically relating to looping and sequencing in a live performance has been incorporated.

Day 2
Frank Balde [Steim's software programmer] demonstrated the features and usability of junXion.

JunXion is basically the software that communicate with customized hardware. You can assign the incoming data (midi or OSC) to variables and route them to other programs like LiSa. Like LiSa, JunXion is very easy to use, allowing various 'treatments' (e.g. scaling, routing) for the incoming sensory data. VERY EASY TO USE is the marketing point of both products. However, a couple of things to note are that it runs on OSX or OS9 only, the user interface is not customizable, and they are currently not undergoing further development. However, development ideas are being contemplated. Did I mention that it is very easy to use? You can start making music in about 10 minutes after installation of both products.

Anne LaBerge ["http://www.annelaberge.com/"] demonstrated the use of her customized interfaces, as well as, organizational techniques for improvisation. She uses Max/Msp for sorting her sensory input (pedals mostly), and she uses a modular analog synthesis software (like PD or MAX) that is included with her processing hardware. Lots of effects in the box. Basically, she is using technology as a means of extending the timbral qualities of her instrument, as well as, give herself a chance of being heard in an electric band. She uses video and messages (via udp in MAX, etc.) as a means of communication with other performers and musicians. In this way, she is able to create a loose improvisational structure.
What I find quite funny is how she has incorporated the arduino into her ensemble-improvasation technique. Basically, she built an interface (a button and a slider) that is connected to the arduino. This is used by the musician so they can control their sound, or the processing of there signal. Also, she has used this interface as a way of introducing democracy in to her organizational techniques, whereby the musician is allowed to vote on which musical motif or section should be played. I asked her what happens if the musician chooses to 'pass' on many of the musical motifs that are suggested. She said, “you have to get rid of those musicians.” I am still waiting for her piece entitled, The Little Problem Called Democracy.

Day 3
Taku Mizuta Lippit {"http://www.djsniff.com/"} provided an overview of Steim's mission objectives and demonstrated his turntable art. Similar to Anne, he considers technology as a means of extending the qualities of his turntable.

In his lecture he focused to show overview of structure for sound making on experimental music field. It was organized systematically that input; physical interface -> processing; exchanging the signal to some information -> assign; connect this information to some function generating sound -> output; playing sound. He also showed a few examples of each part by particular artists works.

The afternoon program continued with Daniel Schorno [http://www.pocketopera.info/]
, who showed us the interfaces he uses and excerpts from his Pocket Opera.

WHY?
Why experimental musicians need these particular musical devices? As one of the reason, they invent their own instruments cause normal musical instruments can not make sound what they want. It is important to consider about Taku's suggestion that "Think every time about why you need your own instrument".

I always wonder how people assess the quality of experimental music, and how experimental musicians prepare particular system to make sound. The sounds generated by their systems are mostly outside of the typical musical element. That is, the typical element is when people feel "it is music" because they are identifiable musical characteristics, such as, melody, harmony and rhythm. These musicians try to escape from established musical rules by using their own system, but at same time they don't throw away all of the musical elements. In the case of the performer, they try, consciously or unconsciously, to extract musical elements from deconstructed systems for reorganizing their own music making. The extracted musical elements are, usually, a fraction of the musical spectrum. The most typical elements used in a performance are more primitive or essential, like dynamics of volume, rhythmic manipulation and variation in density of sonic events.

There is a way to assess these experiments by asking how it is sound can extend the effect of music to the audience. Many of musical instruments are built on the basis of how they function, as a means, of generating sound along musical rules like notes or rhythm. These functions help people to create great music piece, but nowadays this function is also limiting the possibility of creating a new quality of music, or an evolved musical language.

To think how sound can be a component of a musical effect is still a subject for musicians and artists. And, its answer, consequently, is different for each. If artists have already reached their own ideas regarding this subject, then the (previously mentioned) softwares developed in STEIM can be great tools to realize the artist's idea. But each function of STEIM softwares are not quite so new. Unfortunately, there is no stimulation to reach new insight for the artist's own idea. It seems this is why Taku doesn't use STEIM softwares even if he is reminded, everyday, that he should be using them.

Rob van Kranenburg werkte van oktober 2007 tot april 2009 bij Waag Society als Programmaleider voor het Domein Samenleving. Twee dagen per week werkt hij als docent, voornamelijk aan kunst- en design academies. Als innovatie consultant houdt hij zich bezig met onderhandelings strategiëen voor nieuwe technologiëen, op dit moment zijn dat ubicomp en rfid (radio frequency identfication). Daarnaast is de relatie tussen het formele en informele binnen economisch en cultureel beleid onderwerp van onderzoek. En hij houdt zich bezig met de voorwaarden voor een duurzame culturele economie.
Rob van Kranenburg studeerde cum laude af in Literatuur Theorie aan de Universiteit van Tilburg. Hij begon met werken bij Professor Ronald Soetaert in Gent, aan de faculteit Onderwijskunde. Daar ontwikkelde hij online leermodules, methoden en concepten met als uitgangsppunt multi-geletterdheid. In 2000 vertrok hij naar Amsterdam om te werken als programmamaker media-educatie in De Balie, centrum voor cultuur en politiek . Daarnaast was hij ook docent en coordinator van het nieuwe media programma aan de UvA, afdeling film- en televisie wetenschappen. Met het gevoel dat het terrein van de nieuwe media eigenlijk te jong is om te historiseren begon hij bij Doors of Perception als co-programmamaker en stelde hij met John Thackara het programma van Doors 7 samen: Flow, the design challenge of pervasive computing. In 2003 was hij mentor bij de postgraduate cursus voor performance, theater en kunst bij APT, Arts, Performance, Theatricality.

The Internet of Things is the second issue in the series of Network Notebooks. It’s a critique of ambient technology and the all-seeing network of RFID by Rob van Kranenburg. Rob examines what impact RFID and other systems, will have on our cities and our wider society. He currently works at Waag Society as program leader for the Public Domain and wrote earlier an article about this topic in the Waag magazine and is the co-founder of the DIFR Network. The notebook features an introduction by journalist and writer Sean Dodson.

The launch includes short presentations from Martijn de Waal, Eric Kluitenberg and Klaas Kuitenbrouwer, and a discussion, led by Geert Lovink.

In Network Notebook #2, titled The Internet of Things, Rob van Kranenburg outlines his vision of the future. He tells of his early encounters with the kind of location-based technologies that will soon become commonplace, and what they may mean for us all. He explores the emergence of the “internet of things”, tracing us through its origins in the mundane back-end world of the international supply chain to the domestic applications that already exist in an embryonic stage. He also explains how the adoption of he technologies of the City Control is not inevitable, nor something that we must kindly accept nor sleepwalk into. In van Kranenburg’s account of the creation of the international network of Bricolabs, he also suggests how each of us can help contribute to building technologies of trust and empower ourselves in the age of mass surveillance and ambient technologies.

Thanks to Jan Klug and to the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen we have been able to organize for the 100 years of the Futurist Manifesto another edition of Cinema Solubile, our small temporary autonomous zone format for cinematic creativity.
The recourrence will be double, because it will also recur the 10th year anniversary of “UNOROSSO”, the improvisation poetry reading project kept up by Fausto Casara and Federico “il cane” since the 1999 futurist manifesto anniversary in Rome (Italy). You can ear some of our recordings on the still not dead website on myspace if you like, yeah I know, myspace sucks…
The Event will be split in two evenings.
the first evening is the 10th, were the 11 makers will be introduced to our audience and to the futurist message. You will be welcomed by the resident unorosso orchestra with sounds, historical recordings, poetical readings and a dynamic lecture by Federico “il cane” Bonelli about the importance of futurism in post tidal ecumenism of the XXIst century. At the end of the evening the makers will put in the hat their one-liner title for a short film and after a sacrifice to the robotic muses they will pick from Marinetti’s hat their destiny and depart with their own task.
In the second evening, the 11th of february, the short films will be presented to the audience and thereafter destroyed. The unorosso orchestra will stay available to the makers for eventual live sonorization of the films and to provoke the audience with more contemporary poetic terrorism acts.
The chosen location for the event is the RKZ bios in het Oude RKZ, Emmastraat
15 in Groningen.

These grants were established by the Municipality of Groningen in 1986 as a tribute to the poet, painter and draughtsman Hendrik de Vries (1896-1989). Every year, the Municipality makes two grants, each worth € 6000, available to two up-and-coming talents in the creative arts. This year, the prize was oriented toward the visual arts.

There were six candidates. The Frank Mohr Institute was well represented with no fewer than three former students (Freija Eshuijs, Daniël Machado Valentim and Alex Winters) and by the current first-year student Sonja-Vanessa Schmitz. The other candidates were Feiko Beckers and Michael Karr.
In conjunction with her sister Sarah, Freya Eshuijs won one of the grants. The jury was extremely enthusiastic about their co-production.

MFA IME

General Information

Interactive media and environment (IME) is an inter-disciplinary studio programme
for experimental art research; through media and computer generated art.

The program includes development of digital art in performances, sculpture, installations, interactive events, moving images and sound; realized through for example web based
works, artistic software development, video, (3D) computer animations, digital imaging.
This can lead towards specific programming and electronics; as well as to exploring our
perception in relation to daily used applications such a video, blog, Ipod, mobile.
As visionary story-tellers participants are stimulated to explore new technologies in the
context of a hybrid and changing environment.

The program includes knowledge and reflection on (computer-mediated) art
and media theory; and theoretical, technological and scientific developments.
Media art is now being created in relation to digital communication, artificial life,
algorithmic art, nano-technology, artificial intelligence, and as yet unknown technologies.
Participants are challenged to investigate the intersections of art, technology and science,
and thus become acquainted with contents and contexts creating a changing relation to the traditional definition of art.

About the programme
The works of the participating professionals are backed up by reflection and art theoretical
depth. The complexity of (interactive) media practice requires clear structures in which skills,
knowledge and vision come together. Participants choose their combination of disciplines,
deepen their own skills and collaborations in which they direct others, and in which the
institute can facilitate. Theoretical skills will be developed through both written text as well
as debate. The program includes visits and participation in (international) art shows and
conferences.

Students participating in the program form a learning community; including teachers and
former students. In order to make as effective use as possible of this knowledge network
the Frank Mohr Institute has developed a wiki site where staff and students can share
information.
