Omschrijving

Het Groninger Forum blikt terug in het verleden, staat met beide benen in het heden en springt naar de toekomst met het Schoolplein van de eenentwintigste eeuw. De deuren van ForumImages staan wijd open voor iedereen van 8 tot 80 om te komen spelen op het Schoolplein van de eenentwintigste eeuw. Dat kan natuurlijk niet zonder een blik te hebben geworpen in de geschiedenis en kennis te hebben gemaakt met het schoolplein van het verleden. Ondertussen denk je natuurlijk na over wat er op dit moment allemaal op het schoolplein gebeurt - maar je kunt er ook vrolijk voor kiezen om je (met of zonder kinderen) vol overgave te storten in de futuristische schoolpleingames, die speciaal voor dit project zijn ontworpen en ontwikkeld door mediakunstenaars van de FMI Masters (Frank Mohr Instituut). De games staan opgesteld in zaal 2 en in het filmcafé in ForumImages, zij-aan-zij met nostalgisch spelmateriaal. Wees welkom!

Painteractive! - Pasquale Direse
Painteractive! is een virtueel schilderspel. Met een draadloos apparaat, dat ook nog geluid maakt, kun je de muren of het filmdoek beschilderen in allerlei fantastische kleuren. Verf en kwasten zijn niet meer nodig!

BodyPong - Jan Klug
Dit spel is gebaseerd op de klassieke videogame Pong, maar vindt plaats op een echt geprojecteerd speelveld. De spelers gebruiken hun lichaam als instrument om de virtuele bal heen en weer te spelen.

Augmented Reality Puzzle - Sarah Janβen

Een team kinderen maakt samen een puzzel. De puzzelstukken op de grond hebben ieder een AR-code die gefilmd wordt met een webcam. Door de puzzelstukken goed te positioneren worden ze door de camera gelezen en wordt de afbeelding langzamerhand zichtbaar op de muur (projectie). Alleen door goed samen te werken kunnen de deelnemers de puzzel oplossen.

Hoe houd je zo lang mogelijk je voeten droog? Een groepje kinderen staat op een eiland dat steeds kleiner wordt. Wanneer het eiland in tweeën breekt, heb je drie seconden om te beslissen of je overspringt naar een nieuw eiland, of dat je op het oude eiland blijft staan. Zo ontstaan en verdwijnen er continu nieuwe eilanden.

De Proto Game Machine is een behendigheidsspel waarin twee teams tegen elkaar spelen: een team gebruikt een kleurensensor om aan te vallen, het andere team beweegt de tafelplaat om de ballen te laten rollen ter verdediging.

Order vs. Chaos en Zus & Zo - Marcel de Vries
Order vs. Chaos is een audiovisueel spektakelspel, een Jongenskast, dat door een of twee spelers tegelijk bespeeld kan worden. Zus & Zo is een vrolijke kast vol wonderbaarlijke wezens en swingende creaturen, speciaal voor meisjes. Groepjes deelnemers kunnen rouleren tussen de gamemachines. De diverse spelelementen in de kasten zijn te bedienen via verschillende sensoren en een uitgebreid knoppenpaneel; de participatie van de spelers en hun onderlinge communicatie zijn de ingrediënten om de spelkasten tot leven te wekken.

Verschillende stellen plaatjes worden geprojecteerd op de muur, de bijbehorende reeks beelden op de vloer. Probeer twee dezelfde plaatjes te vinden: ren over de vierkanten, stop en klik twee keer met je voet op het vakje om het te openen. De speler met de meeste gevonden paren wint.

Het speelvlak bestaat uit een groot vierkant, met in de verst van elkaar verwijderde hoeken een gele en een blauwe zone. De deelnemers moeten proberen van de ene naar de andere zone te komen zonder te worden getikt door de alsmaar bewegende rode stip waardoor ze worden opgejaagd. Als je wordt getikt, klinkt er een toeter en ben je af. Degene die als laatste overblijft, heeft gewonnen.

Studio Roosegaarde: Interactive Landscapes
Artist and architect Daan Roosegaarde explores the dawn of a new nature that is evolving from technological innovations by designing interactive landscapes that instinctively respond to sound and movement. Daan Roosegaarde’s remarkable works of art function as a documentation of the dynamic relations between architecture, people and e-culture. His sculptures Dune, Liquid Space, Flow and Intimacy embody an environment of ‘tactile high-tech’ in which the visitors and the space become one. The connection that is established between design and content, between ideology and technology, results in what Roosegaarde calls ‘techno-poetry’. His lecture Interactive Landscapes offers a futuristic perspective on every-day reality.
Roosegaarde’s work has been shown at the Tate Modern and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and at the National Museum in Tokyo, as well as in public spaces all around the world.

Establishing dialogues about art and technology
With its courses Bachelor Autonomous Visual Art, Teacher Visual Art and Design, Pop Culture, Design and FMI Masters, Studium Minerva sails under the flag of the Art and Society Knowledge Centre. To maintain this imagery, jetties are offered by the various courses of the Minerva Art Academy in the form of unusual and inspiring activities such as lectures, debates, workshops and/or master classes, the aim being to discover the space for artistic contributions to society.
By means of this quest, Studium Minerva makes manifest the different positions of artists, designers and educators in the professional field and society alike, at the same time stimulating the creation of space for new contributions from an artistic angle.
In this context, the artistic autonomy of artists and their artistic and/or critical way of thinking is the point of departure. This offers opportunities to make unexpected connections with various disciplines and topical social and scientific issues.
Studium Minerva takes place when dusk is falling and Minerva’s owl flies out. On several evenings, dialogues and other activities will be organized on the subject of art and technology. Especially on such dusky evenings, the fear of the dark may be enhanced by the existing romantic and distorted dread of technology.
Studium Minerva seeks to reach a wide audience of students, lecturers, alumni, enthusiasts and others interested in the subject.

On this occasion, the so-called Hap van Klaas * (Klaas’s snacks) will be available to students, which means that on payment of a small amount they will be offered the opportunity to have dinner prior to the lectures.

Termtutor iME Sonia Cillari (autumn term)

Italian media artist and architect, lives and works in Amsterdam. Her work involves the creation of sensorial and perceptual mechanisms in immersive and augmented environments. Over the last years she has been specifically interested in a field of research concerning the ‘Body as Interface’. She was artist in residence at V2_, Institute for the Unstable Media (Rotterdam 2004), Rijksakademie (Amsterdam 2004-2005), STEIM and Netherlands Media Art Institute (Amsterdam 2006), [ars]numerica (Montbeliard 2009). Her interactive installations have been exhibited and presented internationally. She received the Excellence Prize at Japan Media Arts Festival (Tokyo, Japan 2008) and the Honorable Mentions at Prix Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria 2007) and VIDA 9.0 (Madrid, Spain 2006). She has been a member of the jury for Prix Ars Electronica, Interactive Art 2008 and Prix Ars Electronica, Hybrid Art 2009.

De Hot 100 lossen het op

Tijdens Picnic mochten de Hot100 zich gisteren op een assortiment 'e-culture'-problemen werpen.

Toen ik studeerde was het laatste dat je wilde het lievelingetje van de docent zijn. Dat is voor de Hot100 wel even anders. De favorieten van docenten bij kunst-, media- en communicatieopleidingen werden de Hot100 gedoopt en mochten tijdens Picnic gezamenlijk werken aan een zevental inspirerende opdrachten.
'Hoe distribueer je mediakunst?'. 'Hoe ziet de toekomst van de krantenillustratie er uit?'. 'Hoe bied je toeristen het cultuuraanbod aan dat bij ze past?'. Met dit soort vragen worstelden de studenten gisteren en ze smulden ervan.
De selectieformule is wat ondoorzichtig, maar de enorme variatie in typen studenten maakt de Hot100 wel tot een prachtige dwarsdoorsnede van de cultuurmakers van morgen. Van mediatechnologiestudent tot beeldend kunstenaar. In de volgende Bright kun je met vijf studenten van de Hot100 nader kennismaken.

Alternative Modernity

In het pand van MFA Schilderkunst aan de Boteringesingel is naast de eindexamenexpositie ook een presentatie te zien van het werk van de eerstejaars studenten Jisan Ahn, Rob Bouwman, Walter van Pijkeren en Fabian Westphal. De tentoonstelling is samengesteld door kunstcritica en semesterdocent Ingrid Commandeur en draagt de titel: Alternative Modernity.

Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving

Van 3 juli t/m 8 juli presenteert Academie Minerva ook het werk van afgestudeerden van de bachelors Autonome Beeldende Kunst, Vormgeving Communicatie, Vormgeving Ruimtelijk Ontwerp en Docent Beeldende Kunst en Vormgeving. De expositie is te bezichtigen aan het Gedempte Zuiderdiep 158 en in het voormalig postkantoor aan de Munnekeholm 1 te Groningen. De expositie wordt tegelijk met de expositie van de FMI Masters geopend aan het Gedempte Zuiderdiep 158 op zaterdag 3 juli om 16.00 uur.

Academie voor Popcultuur

Afgestudeerden Muziek en Vormgeving van de Academie voor Popcultuur in Leeuwarden presenteren zich in een eindexamenshow met de titel 'Here we are everywhere part deux' op vrijdag 2 juli 2010 op de eigen locatie aan de Achter de Hoven 23 in Leeuwarden. Aanvang is om 19.30 uur en entree is gratis.

The art of randomized landscaping


Sarah Janssen is a cross-media designer, and is currently enrolled in the Frank Mohr MFA Interactive Media and Environments. Janssen recently launched an interesting project called Googlescape. She advertises it as a web-based gallery of photographs generated via Google Streetview.

The Googlescape project website reloads automatically, showing a new randomly selected ‘landscape’ somewhere in the Netherlands every minute. The photographs are displayed in the middle of the screen, against a black background. It is as if you are looking at these photographs as works of art. This experience is heightened because Janssen left out most of Google Streetview’s interactive interface, and because she used other display conventions familiar to the art world besides the centered presentation, for instance by giving the photos a title, an ‘author’ (Google), and a date.

Googlescape made me ponder on the differences between interactive Google streetview users, who usually look at particular places with a particular goal in mind, and Janssen’s passive spectators, who watch the randomly generated views on Holland pass before their eyes. The composition of the photographs is also intriguing. The Google camera was placed on top of a car. When these images travel to Janssen’s website in the guise of landscapes, they feel artificial, in the sense that they do not refer back to a human body or an eye behind the camera. This sense of artificiality is enhanced due to the stitching of different images taken at regular intervals. The human, ‘subjective’, element of individual scene selection we know from conventional landscape photography was not part of the production process.

Interestingly, some of the images do come across as very pleasing to the eye, and it would not surprise me if they could serve as sources of inspiration for landscape photographers.

It was nice to have a lecture and studio visit with American performer/composer and cycling 74 accomplice, Gregory Taylor yesterday. The visit started with a lunchtime concert in studio A7 (photo: top left to right, bottom) with myself, adapted mandolin; Greg, laptop; and Kasper, re-appropriated and homemade instruments. The topic of his lecture centered on data control structures. I will say, he is not one to hold back; even after the lecture, he was forth-coming with suggestions and ideas for approaching musical ideas. Thanks to Jan for organizing the visit. GREGORY TAYLOR EXTENDS THE REACH OF AMBIENT IMPROV
The world is full of musicians who can humble us with their ability to play for really long periods of time,” says mixologist and producer Gregory Taylor, explaining his fascination with Indian ragas and Indonesian tonal systems — just two of the many musical forms that propel his creative flow. “One of the great gifts of experimental music of the 1960s, and John Cage in particular, was the idea that what makes a piece of music meaningful is the contemplation of it. And in the last decade or so, the arrival of wholesale access to non-Western music also gave us the great gift of discovery that this wasn't our idea.”

A veteran of the indie “cassette culture” craze in the '80s, and a tireless musical traveler (with a weekly radio show on Madison's WORT-FM that has aired since 1986), Taylor knows a thing or two about the regenerative power of sound. His mastery of Cycling '74's Max/MSP opened the door for his contribution to another one of that company's products: Radial, a loop-based performance suite (since discontinued) developed by John Eichenseer. Taylor has used the program to stunning effect on a recent spate of releases: The Desert Fathers: Coptic Icons (pfMentum, 2007), recorded live with trumpeter Jeff Kaiser; PGT's Temporary Habitations (Loochtone, 2008), featuring mandolinist Terry Pender and programmer Brad Garton; and Taylor's solo outings, Amalgam: Aluminum/Hydrogen (Palace of Lights, 2007) and Two Maps of Danaraja (Stasisfield, 2008).

“I've found that the simplest thing you can do to sound different from everybody else is to make your own loops,” Taylor explains. “Radial matches my sensibility because it's something that I can play with from zero as soon as I walk onstage. I tend to start with nothing when I play live — on The Desert Fathers, there might have been some filtered shortwave broadcasts or some water in a bathtub or something — and I do that because a lot of my work is informed by Indonesian tradition. With electronic instruments, it's easier to manage timbre if you work with just intonational variants of Indonesian tunings.”

In his solo outings, Taylor explores the subtle timbral variations of the Indonesian gamelan ensemble with an even more drawn-out ambient approach; ringing sonic textures gradually morph and “breathe” to reveal new elements or to build on a haunting theme. In his collaborations, Taylor often delves into Radial's ability to cut up and rearrange samples in real time, adding a glitchlike rhythmic quality to his soundscapes.

“We're essentially designing big structures that we steer by using a single control,” Taylor notes. “Instead of thinking about doing music that's about change, you do it about the rate of change. Instead of controlling a filter all the time, for example, the filter slewing is essentially under some other piece of control, and I'm controlling something else that controls that as a side effect.”

As with any experimental music that's improvised almost entirely live, the end result does involve some risk. But when it comes to working in a group, the approach has its rewards. “There's not a performance tradition for using laptops,” Taylor says. “I was afraid when I started working with other people that I wouldn't be able to adapt to that. And at a certain point, you realize that working in a community gives you the opportunity to fail. But the upside is that I've found myself in situations where I can play with people who are my friends. How does it get better than that?”

Gerald Van Der Kaap is een van de belangrijkste Nederlandse kunstenaars, en een grondlegger van het gebruik van nieuwe media in de beeldende kunsten. Hij is sinds 1993 veelgevraagd vj in vele binnen- en buitenlandse clubs. Van Der Kaap begon zijn loopbaan als fotograaf en uitgever van het tijdschrift Zien (1980-1986). Hij kreeg in 1991 een eerste solo-tentoonstelling in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (Hover Hover), waarna vele tentoonstellingen volgden in binnen- en buitenlandse galeries en musea.

Zijn werk is vaak gepresenteerd tijdens evenementen zoals Heineken Night Live in AHOY Rotterdam met een symfonieorkest van 80 man (1999), en in bekende Amsterdamse gelegenheden, zoals Club RoXY en Chemistry. Vanaf 2000 organiseert hij maandelijks State of Bliss, een experimentele clubavond in samenwerking met DJ´s Dimitri en 100% Isis.

In 1996 kreeg Gerald Van Der Kaap de Capilux Alblas Prijs voor zijn hele oeuvre. Naar aanleiding hiervan verscheen de monografie Wherever you are on this planet, met een overzicht van zijn werk tot dan toe (Uitgeverij 1001). Gerald Van Der Kaap was born in Enschede, the Netherlands, in 1959.
He studied at Academie voor beeldende Kunsten St. Joost, Breda.
From 1980 until 1989 he worked as an editor and publisher for different magazines.
He has carried out several commissioned art projects. He also works as VJ and is the creator of an “automatic veejay machine” at club 013 in the South of Holland.
He has also worked as a producer of art visual magazines such as Zien (1980-86) and Blind (1989).
He currently works on a number of assignments and projects which have/will become public shows in the Netherlands.
He’s been awarded Capi-Lux Alblas prize in 1996.

Gerald Van Der Kaap is one of the world’s leading media artists whose work has caused considerable controversy.

Passing the Information (II) is the sequel to a project of the same name, which Van Der Kaap presented in 2002 in Xiamen, China. Van Der Kaap spent three months as artist in residence at the University of Xiamen, a fast growing city on the South China Coast. According to officials, Xiamen is not only the most beautiful but also the cleanest city in China. For his exhibition in Xiamen, Van Der Kaap rebuilt a classroom with traditional Chinese school desks. A white surface was installed as a type of blackboard on which the artist projected video portraits of students he made acquaintance with. Passing the Information does not present teachers in front of the classroom, but students watching students telling jokes or students looking into the camera with a penetrating gaze. In this setting, the entirety of Chinese hierarchy and authority is temporarily neutralized, if not nullified. Without solicitation, Van Der Kaap also organized an outdoor party where he was both VJ and DJ. More than 1000 young people attended the party, which was the first of its kind in China.

Part Two consists of a series of works that result from a rigid, almost formal direction. The works explore situations in and around the campus and demonstrate an outstanding quality. They reside in a liminal zone between reality and fiction. The works are neither wholly documentary in nature nor illusions of narcissistic dreams. They are more a reflection of an engaged approach in which people are not models or actors, but participants. No commitment is implied, but Van Der Kaap aims to stimulate, or as he describes it, “pass on information.”

If Part One can be qualified as a “Manifestation,” Part Two is certainly a “Manifesto.” According to Van Der Kaap, “these are temporary and autonomous actions. Yet in one way or another they seem to bear consequence in the spheres outside photography. In China at least, they seem to interfere in their reality. Why specifically there? Maybe because such turbulent changes are taking place in China at this time. This work requires a totally new culture…"

The leading roles in Passing the Information are interpreted by three Chinese girls: Fang, Limei and Weiwei. Any real-life resemblances is merely coincidental. They play themselves, other people, and their own dreams. Van der Kaap has kept the hundreds of sms-messages and diary notes that he received from China via e-mail for a future publication or film. He may use this material when he returns to Shanghai to make a short film. As the artist said himself, "This is a work-in-progress. The making of as well as the meaning of the work change in time and through passing …let’s make it easy… the information."

Blindspot Gallery is set up to bring contemporary photography, an art form that has entered the blind spot of the Hong Kong art market, to a higher degree of visibility and through its quality exhibitions, provide its audience a different level of stimulation. Blindspot Gallery focuses predominantly on contemporary photography. Being one of a small number of galleries in Hong Kong committed to this area, we see increasing appreciation, understanding and popularity of contemporary photography as its major missions. We feature both established and emerging photographers and artists, mainly from the region but not limited to.

A gallery space on Aberdeen Street near Hollywood Road in Central, opposite to the former Police Married Quarters soon to be re-opened for art and cultural exhibitions. The gallery hosts approximately 6-8 exhibitions a year

About ‘Secret dialogue: about children hospital’ (2009)
‘Secret dialogue: about children hospital’ contains a dual screen High Definition video and a series of panoramic images, about the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children in Hackney that was closed down in 1997. After the hospital was closed down, there were burglar and passer-by entering the hospital without permission, now the site is guarded by security. For more than ten years, the empty site intertwined with the history of the children patients, the hospital staff and the interlopers. The remains from people establish certain hidden dialogue.

About the video
The image and the use of effect are simply ‘triggers’ of the thinking of the past and of the compressed childhood life from an empty site that was abandoned. The video attempted to by ‘triggering’ viewer’s short-term memory, then to explore individual value about life and death.

Time seems frozen at the site, but subtly mixed with different interferences by different people at different time. The linear installation of the images leads the audience to witness the interlacing timelines of the history of the hospital.

Research projects:

Partner in "CAREN", a Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment. The project is aimed at developing a computer controlled environment for the assistence of rehabilitation of patients with movements disorders.

Several projects concerning the control of movements in humans, such as walking, standing and changing direction.

Project together with the University of Calgary (Canada) on muscle mechanoreceptors.

Projects on the quantification of movements of babies in the first few months together with dr. M. Hadders-Algra.

Project on the biomechanics and control of the human jaw system.

Tweedejaarsstudenten MFA Painting, MFA Scenography, MFA IME van het Frank Mohr Instituut / Hanzehogeschool Groningen presenteren van 14 januari t/m 6 februari 2010 hun werk in de DeFKa Campis. Opening donderdag 14 januari om 16.00 uur

Als we een indruk willen krijgen welke richting de beeldende kunst in de toekomst zal inslaan kunnen we dat het beste doen door werk van masterstudenten te tonen, zij zijn immers de kunstenaars van de toekomst. Al een aantal keren heeft DeFKa werk laten zien van masterstudenten Painting, dit jaar worden daar voor het eerst studenten Scenography en IME aan toegevoegd.

Met werk van: Rongrong Bi, Yuan Gao, Willemien Mostert, Thijs Jansen, Sanne Klijs, Erik Tode, Jan Wattjes, Eleanor Grootoonk, Sonja-Vanessa Schmitz en Grace Ballestero Bello.
